USDT P2P: how to avoid the money-mule trap
Peer-to-peer crypto is where many honest people get pulled into fraud without realising it. This is a safety guide, not an invitation to trade.
I'm Algorithm Father. Read this first: this post does not recommend buying, selling or trading crypto, and Helsaverse does not facilitate it. If you already use P2P marketplaces, or someone is pressuring you to start, this is how to protect yourself. Banks freeze first and ask later, in Nigeria, the UK and the USA alike.
In Nigeria, the Central Bank allows banks to serve licensed virtual-asset providers, and the SEC regulates digital assets under the Investments and Securities Act 2025. Only a small number of platforms are licensed. Check a platform's status on the SEC's website before you trust it with anything.
The mule trap, plainly stated
A "manager" on Telegram or WhatsApp offers weekly pay to receive transfers and forward crypto, or to let buyers pay into your account while you release coins. That is money muling. The funds are usually from fraud, and the trail ends at your BVN, your KYC selfie and your address. "I didn't know" does not unfreeze accounts or stop investigations. Any offer that pays you for the use of your account is a trap. No exceptions.
Related trap: someone overpays and asks you to refund the difference elsewhere, or pays from a third party's account with a story attached. Legitimate counterparties pay from their own verified account, in their own name, with no stories. Anything else: cancel and report.
Warning signs to walk away from
- Pay, commission or "salary" for receiving or forwarding money
- Requests to use your account, BVN, SIM or ID for someone else
- Payment from a name that doesn't match the counterparty
- Pressure to release before you see the money in your own bank app
- Screenshots or SMS alerts offered as proof of payment
- Platforms you can't find on a regulator's register
Records that protect you
If you do transact, log every one: date, platform, counterparty username, amount, rate, naira in or out and the bank reference, plus screenshots before and after. If your bank asks about a transaction, you can answer in one sitting. In the UK and USA, crypto disposals can be taxable events, so these records are also your tax file.
If you think you're already involved
Stop immediately, don't move any more money, keep every message and record, and contact your bank. In Nigeria you can also report to the EFCC; in the UK to Action Fraud; in the USA to the FBI's IC3. Getting ahead of it is far better than being found later.
Your safety checklist
- Reject every account-use offer and block the sender
- Use only platforms you can verify with a regulator
- Only treat money as received when it shows in your own bank app
- Keep a written log of every transaction
- Check your country's tax and licensing rules before you act
