The 10% habit that survives low income

Don't save what's left after spending. Spend what's left after saving 10%, the order is the whole trick.

People tell me they can't save because they earn too little. Then we do the math together and find the money was there, it just left first. Saving works like a feed algorithm: small inputs, repeated, beat one big move you never make.

The three steps

Step one: pick the percentage before payday. Ten percent is the default. Earn ₦100,000 and ₦10,000 moves first. Earn $2,000 and $200 moves first. Earn £1,500 and £150 moves first. If 10% truly breaks the month, start at 5% and raise it quarterly, never zero.

Step two: separate it the same day. A different account, a different wallet, a trusted cooperative, anywhere you don't check daily. Money sitting next to spending money gets spent. That is not weakness, it is how attention works.

Step three: automate or ritualize. Standing transfer orders beat willpower in every country I teach. If your bank app supports it, schedule the move for payday morning. If not, make it the first thing you do when the alert lands, same order, every time.

What counts as an emergency

Hospital bills, missed rent, a dead phone you need for work, yes. A sale, a party, lending to a friend who will “pay back Friday”, no. Write your own two lists once and the decision is already made when pressure hits.

Aim first for one month of basic expenses saved. That single buffer turns most crises from debt into inconvenience. Everything after that can go toward bigger goals.

Your checklist for this week

  • Open or pick the separate place, see my bank account checklist if you need one.
  • Set the transfer for next payday, even if it is 5% to start.
  • Write your two emergency lists and keep them where you keep money decisions.

Saving is the floor. Earning more is the ceiling, browse the Side Income shelf when you're ready.
