Open your first bank account without the traps

Banks earn when you don't read the fee table. Three questions asked up front save you a year of small charges.

I teach banking like feeds: follow the incentives and the behavior makes sense. Banks make money from monthly maintenance fees, penalty charges, and the gap between what they pay savers and charge borrowers. None of that is evil, but you should see it before you join.

The three questions

One: is there a monthly fee, and how do I avoid it? Many accounts waive the fee if you keep a minimum balance or receive a salary there. If neither fits your life, pick a different account.

Two: what does moving my own money cost? Transfers between banks, ATM withdrawals outside the network, and card replacement all have price tags. Add the three you will actually use and compare totals, not headlines.

Three: does the app do what I need? If you get paid by transfer and pay by phone, the branch on the corner matters less than instant notifications and free transfers. Visit once; live in the app.

What this looks like by country

In Nigeria, digital-first options like OPay and PalmPay charge little or nothing for basic transfers, while traditional banks may add SMS, maintenance, and card fees that stack quietly. Read the fee schedule PDF, it is boring and it is where the money goes.

In the UK, Monzo and Starling offer fee-free spending with clear in-app breakdowns; high-street banks compete with overdraft terms instead. If you ever dip below zero, the overdraft rate matters more than the app color.

In the USA, local credit unions often beat big banks on fees and minimums. A $5 minimum balance with no monthly fee beats a β€œfree” account that charges $12 whenever your balance slips.

Your checklist for this week

  • List how money moves for you, salary in, transfers out, cash or card.
  • Compare two accounts on the three questions above, using real fee pages.
  • Open one, fund it small, and test a transfer before moving everything.
  • Set one alert for low balance so fees never surprise you.

Once the account is open, give your money its first job with the 10% savings habit.
